Alright folks, this is a rather strange tale, and a tale that has been around for over a century.
Back in the day, long before Peterborough was the bustling city that it is today, there was a woman named Marion (her last name is unknown) who was, well, let's just say, she was well known by the male population in Peterborough.
For whatever reason, whether it was because Marion got mixed up into something she shouldn't have, or annoyed one of her 'customers' and threatened to tell his wife, she was accused of being a witch and was taken up to Armour Hill and burned at the stake.
Today, the Peterborough Museum and Archives sits at the top of Armour Hill, and at the bottom is the Liftlock, both buildins are reportedly haunted, but what a lot of people don't know is that the woods surrounding Armour Hill are also said to be haunted...by Marian's ghost.
However, to this day, there is absolutly no records or documentation that claims that a woman was ever accused of being a witch in Peterborough, let alone burned at the stake. But as we all know, somethings can be swept under the rug, especially when the people involved are high up in society.
A few years ago, the show Creepy Canada rolled into town to film the spooky tales surrounding the liftlock, when the show finally aired, the episode tended to focus more on the possible 'witche's ghost' then the spooks who inhabit the liftlock.
As the story goes, Marian seems to have a problem with men, and likes to pounce on any unsuspecting prey. It is rumoured that her ghost still haunts the woods on Armour Hill.
AUGUST 12th, 2010
On this particular night, there was to be a meteor shower, the biggest and brightest one out of the year and anyone who lives in Peterborough knows, that when such a thing comes around, the best place to see this is up on Armour Hill. It is away from the city lights and free of light pollution, and is also the biggest hill in Peterborough.
So I contacted two friends of mine and we made plans to head up to Armour Hill to check out the meteor shower and also sneak in a quick ghost hunt at the Liftlock, which is right beside where we were going to be!
Around midnight, the heavens opened and we got quite the display of shooting stars dancing across the night sky. It was a beautiful, clear, moonless night and this was really the first time I had stayed up to watch a meteor shower. However, after a while, each flying star started to look the same and the show got, well, kinda boring! So what else was there to do but go ghost hunting.
Now, from where we were and to get to the Liftlock, we had to cut through part of the woods. There is a pathway that leads straight to the liftlock. Although you don't actually HAVE to walk through the woods, it is a lot faster if you want to get to the locks.
Remember however, this was around 12:30 at night.
So the three of us made our way through the trees, my friend leading the way with the light from his ipod (none of us, including me, thought to bring a flashlight). As we got to about the middle of this small wooded area, something strange suddenly seemed to happen. I noticed a strange feeling in my throat. It started near the bottom then made its way up and I soon started to have the horrible sensation my throat was closing up. I said nothing to my two friends but no sooner had this feeling happened when suddenly our friend with the ipod stated that he had a strange feeling in his throat, as though his throat were closing off. Our friend also stated she had the same feeling. So if I wasn't already freaked out standing in the middle of a wooded area at 12:30 at night, with nothing more then the light from an ipod, I was certainly freaked out now. My words were 'we're getting out of here...NOW!'
Being a ghost hunter, I am quite aware of what fear can do to a person, but when it comes down to it, I was not afraid at all as we made our way through the woods, at least I didn't think I was, and the fact that all three of us got the strange feeling in our throats at the exact same time is just...well...weird and a little creepy.
Anyhow, just after I proclaimed we were getting out of there, I snapped a picture and we were gone from the woods and out onto the road leading to the locks. We stopped and I looked at the picture I had just taken.
Now this, ladies and gentlemen, is where I leave it all up to you. The final conclusion of the story I just told you and the photo you are about to see is completly up to you!
These two photos are the same picture, the first one is the original, the second one I edited it and gave it some sephia hues and brightened it a bit, to try and focus on the 'figure' I caught in the photo.
